The Necessity Of Green Cleaning

"WE GET PAID FOR BRINGING VALUE TO THE MARKETPLACE" JIM ROHN
Green cleaning refers to using cleaning methods and products with environmentally friendly ingredients designed to preserve human health and environmental quality.

Green cleaning techniques and products avoid the use of chemically reactive and toxic cleaning products which contain various toxic chemicals, some of which emit volatile organic compounds causing respiratory and dermatological problems.

Green cleaning can also describe the way residential and industrial cleaning products are manufactured, packaged and distributed. If the manufacturing process is environmentally friendly and the products are biodegradable, then the term "green" or "eco-friendly" may apply.

Green cleaning is behavioral as well as simply using healthy and environmentally friendly products. Consumers are being made aware of the ways in which green cleaning is most-effectively used.

THE DIRTY TRUTH ABOUT HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS

By this point, everyone knows about the dangers of indoor pollution. According to the US EPA, levels from pollutants indoors can be two to more than 100 times higher than outdoors, and the number one culprit for indoor pollution are our very own cleaning products. Some of the top-selling daily products are the most dirty and toxic: Lysol Antibacterial Spray, which ads encourage parents to spray wherever children play, contains denatured ethanol (which can cause central nervous system depression) and alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, a known pesticide.

Most glass cleaners contain glycol ethers that have been shown to cause reproductive effects if exposed to high enough levels. Pledge contains silicones, butane gas, and propane. All, while good at cutting through gunk, are bonified VOCs. Most air fresheners contain formaldehyde (which is highly toxic and is a known carcinogen) and phenol (a delightful chemical that can cause cold sweats, convulsions, circulatory collapse, coma, and even death). Even the most skeptical of consumers would prefer not to expose their children or pets to such harmful chemicals.

"Cleanliness is next to godliness" is something our mothers drilled into to us as children but the fact of the matter is many cleaning products on the market today are really "hazardous materials", especially for our children. If something can clean the scum off of our shower walls it can probably do some real damage to our lungs and nerves. "Green cleaning" is something we all should be more cognizant of and practice.

However it is important for these environmentally safe cleaning products to really clean because germs and toxins are real.

Here is a description of a legitimate "green cleaning" product.

"INGREDIENTS Ozone Treated Water (for purification), Sodium Citrate (a reaction of citric acid from fermented corn and sodium hydroxide), Citric Acid (from fermented corn), Non-Ionic Detergent (from corn derived ethanol and natural oils), D-Limonene (pesticide residue free, distilled from orange rind oil), Amphoteric Detergent (from coconut and/or palm kernel oil), Amine Oxide (from coconut, palm kernel, and or/soy bean oil). Contains no preservatives."

"ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH Non-toxic. * All ingredients are biodegradable or break down into harmless natural elements. * Biodegrades without forming micro toxins. * Contains no hazardous ingredients as per OSHA regulations. * Free of petroleum distillates, butyl ether, ammonia, chlorine, phosphates, benzene, pine oil, or strong acids. * Free of all known or suspected carcinogens. * Gray water and septic tank safe. * Biodegradable without effluent treatment process."

(I can tell you from personal experience, this all natural cleaning product from Tripleclicks.com really cleans at a fraction of the cost of some cleanser like "409".)

If we take cleaning seriously and our health seriously then we all need to be "green cleaners".
