Quality Trumps Quantity

For me, successful social media engagement is focused on quality first.

What do I mean by this, and why is it important for your social media engagement? Well, consider the following:

Is it better to have 1,000 highly-engaged, motivated, re-tweeting followers on Twitter, or 10,000 followers who barely notice your tweets, least of all re-tweet and share your social media content on a regular basis?

No brainer, really.

Deliver quality deeply

Remember that it’s better to network small and deep than wide and diluted for the best results via social media engagement. What does this mean? Try networking and engaging with a smaller, committed group of social media contacts and watch the positive results. Going for a quantity approach might look impressive, but it’s unlikely to deliver a quality ROI over time.

Have you ever been tempted to purchase some kind of software that will get you 10,000 Facebook Fans or Twitter Followers overnight? Though the big numbers sounds good, successful social media marketing is not a numbers game. It is better to have fewer engaged followers and fans that appreciate your content than thousands that don't give a damn because quality trumps quantity any day of the week.

Yes, Virginia, there is social media etiquette or good manners. The near anonymity of the Internet does not negate the necessity for good manners. Social media etiquette includes not being "smammy", selling or promoting all the time, looking at and sharing what others have to offer as well as not stealing others content as your own. Social media etiquette is essentially following the Golden Rule of doing unto others what you would have them do unto you.

Social Media Blunders

Are you driving people away from your social media profiles?

Social media levels the playing field and allows the low budget websites and small business brands the ability to shine in a competitive, large brand-driven web space.

Unfortunately, mistakes are plenteous and they are costing small businesses their reputation. The big brands have millions of dollars to pump into high-priced agencies, but how does a small business owner know if he is actually achieving a high level of success or making critical mistakes with social media?

The first way to know how to do something is to know how NOT to do it. These 10 social media blunders occur quite frequently.

 1. Too much repetition

 2. Clustered tweets/posts

 3. Unrequited hype

 4. Sales overload

 5. Too much brand-related content

 6. Infrequent posting

 7. Off-time posting

 8. Not talking back

 9. No sharing

 10. Twitter auto DMs

If there is a right way to do social media marketing there is also a wrong way to do social media marketing. Several salient social media mistakes are pointed out in the above article. Too much of anything is bad, especially when it comes to social media because too much posting borders on being spammy. Not being forthright and honest to the point of "over hyping" what we promote is a mistake in social media marketing. When we post is important because there are peak hours in the day to post on social sites. Not being interactive and not sharing other people's content is a very big social media marketing blunder. We all make mistakes but a wise man learns from his mistakes. Let's not make the same social media mistakes twice.

Get Noticed Without Being Spammy

Building up your brand’s social media presence takes time, effort and sometimes a little bit of luck. All of that hard work, however, can be undone by these five common social media mistakes. To avoid a public relations disaster and keep your followers and fans happy, make sure you aren’t committing any of these social media sins.

 1. Not responding to fans/followers in a timely fashion.

 2. Posting the same content across all social networks.

 3. Not posting interactive content.

 4. Not posting enough throughout the day.

"Research shows that Facebook posts as well as tweets have a lifespan of about two to three hours", is a very important statistic pointed out in the above article. Facebook, Twitter and other social media users can increase the lifespan of your posts by retweeting or reposting your submitted content. We mustn't let fear of being viewed a spammer cause us to under post on social media sites. Posting or sharing quality content several times a day but spaced well over the course of the day, is the best way to be noticed in the social media world. Get noticed without being spammy.
